Critical evaluation for A2 Advanced Portfolio

For my A2 advanced portfolio I had to produce a promotional package for a music release. I produced a music video, a Digi-pak and a magazine advertisement for the promotion of an artist’s CD release. The music video production was not an optional choice for the coursework however for the ancillary tasks I had the option of two tasks out of the following three; a 4 or 6 panel Digi-Pak design, a CD release advertisement for a magazine or a website page for the artist.
After considering the skills I learnt from my AS portfolio work, I felt that these skills would be best applied to developing a magazine advertisement and Digi-pak as I had already researched and studied the layouts and contents of magazines, therefore I knew the conventions of magazine advertisements, which helped strongly in the planning of my ancillary tasks.

I began my research by first looking into the history of music videos, I researched how music video production has developed over the last 50 years with the change from analogue to digital, as well as the influence of music channels and shows such as MTV (which launched in 1981) and Top Of The Pops and how they developed the way music videos are promoted on music channels and sent globally through the progression of the internet and social networking. During my research on this topic I also learnt about the progression of music videos, starting as ‘illustrated songs’ and then progressing to ‘Talkies’, and then into ‘Soundies’ and then developing further into ‘Musical Shorts’ and then extended narrative videos were created, developing into music videos. During this research I looked into how the 60’s became one of the most influential time periods for the development of music, with manufactured artists dominating, until The Beatles came into fame as an un-manufactured band who gathered a mass global following. They were the band that transformed styles of performance in music videos as they chose not to perform as characters in their videos, and instead wanted to portray themselves to create a relationship/connection with their largely teenage fan base.
I then researched how the development of colour had an impact on music videos, fitting to the different genres of music; for example black & white for gothic videos and bold colours for pop music videos, as a generalisation. One other fact I concluded from my research into the history of music videos is how, by the 1980’s music videos had become significantly important to the success of an artist as it created opportunities of global promotion and success as well as creating a connection between the artist and their following.

I then went on to research how YouTube and other social networking sites have meant that an artist can now have global success with a song or album almost immediately with using YouTube to debut a music video and then promoting the song on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
Doing research such as this helped me gain an idea of the importance of how effective a music video can be to the success of an artist and therefor the messages that are connoted and the way the artist is presented in their music video is highly important.

In the progression of my planning I then began to look at possible song choices for my own music video production. I wanted a song that had a clear story and would be suitable for a storytelling/narrative style video so I researched album tracks from several artists including Nicola Roberts, Embrace, Coldplay and One Republic. I decided that a brief idea for my song choice was ‘Take A Bite’ by Nicola Roberts as it was a song that had very visual lyrics.

Once I had decided on the genre of my song being Pop music, I started researching pop music and looking at several music videos for this genre. I looked at music videos by Jessie J, One Republic, and Girls Aloud and analysed three videos that I felt had helped influence ideas I was developing for my own video. I used my analysis skills learnt from the exam theory topic at AS, using representation, Mise-en-scene, cinematography and body language to analyse the techniques used in the videos and to establish the conventions of music videos.
By using cinematography to analyse the conventions of camera angles and screen shot sizes I learnt that, as a generalization, most pop music videos use medium close up’s and close up’s as the most frequently used shot size, as well as using eye level camera angles, however in videos for ‘vulnerable’ narrative songs high angle shots are used for effect of vulnerability. This is one particular shot that I planned to use in my video. I also found another convention of pop music video’s when i looked at the styling and clothing of artists such as Jessie J, where it is clear that on-the-trend fashion styles are used to create an appeal and connection between the audience and the artist.
After watching and analysing several videos I then concluded the general conventions of Pop music videos, and then I researched the general conventions of all music videos and the common factors shared by all varying genres of music, which provided me with a strong knowledge of the conventions I need to include in my own video, including close up angle shots, clothes that convey the mood of the artist, establishing shots and body language.

Once I had concluded this initial research I began looking at music videos that are of interest to me and are of the same genre; pop music to be able to gather ideas for which song I would be using and for conventions and techniques used in current videos that I felt would become influential to my own planning of m video. One video in particular that I found influential in leading me to creating ideas for my video was Adele’s Someone Like You. I particularly liked the choice of using black and white for the colouring of the video as it conveyed the tone of the song, which I wanted to convey mostly in my own video. I also looked at the scenes of the video and the scenes were Adele is walking along the river-side which I felt created strong visual effect; this also influenced my ideas and planning in the style of song I wanted to use for my video; a slow, narrative song similarly to Someone Like You.

I then chose to analyse briefly two music videos that I felt have unconventional features about them; Coldplay’s video for ‘Yellow’ and Lana Del Rey’s video for ‘Video Games’. The feature of Lana Del Rey’s video that stands out to me is the use of an ‘unprofessional’ and grainy quality of camera and filming, which makes the video look amateur and original, which influenced my own thought process for my video, as I had the idea to film the video from a first person viewpoint. Although I later decided this idea would not be practical to fit with other ideas i had developed.

After deciding that I wanted to use a slow pop song I looked back at my possible song choices from my early planning and chose the Nicola Roberts song ‘Sticks + Stones’ The song is an album track from her solo album Cinderella’s Eyes and was not released as a single. I chose this particular song because I wanted to have a narrative style video and there is a clear narrative within the lyrics which I felt I would be able to convey well through the performer of my video.
To gain a stronger understanding of the song I then did additional research by watching interviews where the artist talks about the process of writing the song, the meanings behind the lyrics and the message that she wanted the song to convey: that bullying shouldn’t' define or undermine what you think of yourself.
I researched further into the background information of the song and found that the lyrics are a strong autobiographical reference to troubles the artist had during her childhood, Being bullied both at school and during the start of her music career by the press for her image; which is the major influence of the song.

Once I had established the song I was using I then planned questions for audience research, choosing questions such as ‘what style of video do you most prefer for pop music videos’ and ‘Do you think a music video needs to have lip syncing' that helped em in the proccess of planning what i needed consider for my video such as style of video (narrative) and whether the performer will lip sync to the music or not.

Final Digi-Pak (on template)

After completing the final edits that I was happy created a strong image and fitted with the image of the artist, I placed the panels/sides on a 6 panel Digi-pak to show where each side would be placed. I am happy with the final outcome, particularly with the layout of the cover page and how effective the image on the first/main CD looks. I chose to create two lyrics pages as part of the package as opposed to usinng a page for an image and another for a credits page, as i think lyrics would be more interesting as part of the package than, for example, information on album credits. I am pleased with the outcome of the Digi--Pak as i think it fits with the image of the performer that i was aiming to create.

Final - Images for Digi-Pak

Lyrics pages for Digi-Pak

For two pages of my Digi-pak I decided to include two lyrics pages as opposed to a single page for an image of the artist or an album credits page as I think song lyrics are a good page to have in Digi-pak for the audience buying the album especially when the album is credited on its song lyrics.

I divided the page into thirds using the last third (width length) for the image of the performer, and used the first and second sections of the page for the text; I used a bolder pink colour for the ‘Lyrics’ title heading at the top left hand side of the page and for the actual lyrics text, and used a lighter pink colour for the song titles, so it is clearer for the audience to read. I put his text over a black background, which I think looks effective as I think the pink text goes well with the image and the dark background well.

I am happy with how the two lyrics pages turned out, although I do think the text for the lyrics is slightly too small, however it fits well on the pages and is still readable.

Final cover for magazine advert (Ancillary Task)

This is my final magazine advertisement. I changed the font of the text for the artist's name header, and i also adapted the advert from my previous draft by including an image of the CD that is being advertised, and i moved the date of release text to below the image as well as moving the 'Nicola Roberts' text to the header of the page so the audienc/readers will see straight away the name of the artist.
I am pleased with the result of the advertisement and think it stands out well over all, as well as fitting with the image i have for my video and Digi-Pak.

Magazine Advert - first and second drafts

The image above my first attempt at the magazine advertisement as part of my Ancillary tasks. I am pleased with the look and the layout of the 'Nicola Roberts' 'Cinderella Eyes' and '4.04.12' texts and think they look effective. however, i felt that the top half of the page is too empty and the text looks un-efffective on it's own. Therefore i started a second draft of the advertisement (the image below) and included additional text, using varied but complimentary colours to make the advert more interesting and with more reviews, which i added additional information linking the comments to critically acclaimed reviewers. I kept the bottom half of the page the same as the first draft as i am happy with how effective and bold i think it looks.

Back Page of Digi-Pak

This is my first attempt at a back page for my digi-pak. I felt that there was too much pink text which affected the proffessional look i need, and i also thought that the header/ album title looked too plain and didnt stand out, therefore on my second draft i changed the font colour for the track listing to black, keeping the text the same. I then changed the font colour of the album title to a bolder pink, and then i underlined the text to make it appear more stand out. I also added a website link adress and record label copyright text to make the text more proffesional quality.

Drafts for digi-pak

first attempt of Magazine Advert

This is my first draft of a magazine advertisement for my ancillary task. I am happy with the image I have used as I think it draws attention to the performer’s eyes which links with the album title; however I think the blocking of the title is wrong and the different texts I have used are not bold enough so the writing is not clear and therefore looks unprofessional. I also think the use of the block rectangles behind the text and the '5 stars' at the bottom of the page look unproffessional and are not neccessary for the advertisement.

Conventions of digi-pak

Conventions of digi-pak

Digi-Pak’s are designed in 4 sided and 6 sided panelled packages to hold a CD package or a DVD package for sale.
6 sided Digi-pak’s are most regularly used for artists who are re-releasing an album as a deluxe edition, or for new artist’s promoting their debut album, whereas four panelled Digi-pak’s are used for regular album releases.
The sides of a 6 panel digi-pak typically include a cover page (in ‘pop’ music this conventionally includes a close up or medium shot of the artist.) as well as a back page including a track listing, and a further panel would include either a credit’s page, lyrics page or eve just a panel sized image of the artist, in addition to another side being used for a CD disc to be placed.
Whereas, whilst researching I learnt the conventions of a 4 panel digi-pak typically includes a cover panel, a back page for track listing, one side for a CD disc and one side an image of the artist.

magazine advertisements - research

here is an example of a magazine advertisement for an album release. I chose to analyse this particular advertisement as i think Florence is a similar artist in terms of image and sound to my chosen artist (Nicola Roberts) and they have a similar target audience.

- simple text
- centrered text - down centre of page
-image take sup full half of the page
- no additional effects or text needed.
- all text apart from album title is in same text font and colour.
- simple background/ not bold.
= all adds to effectiveness of the advert. - simple is more effective.

Lyrics Page for Digi-pak

this is my first attempt at an inside page/lyrics page for the digi-pak, however i do not like the outcome. Although i want to have the digi-pak having a very simple look, i think there is too little decoration on the age. on my second draft i will have a different coloured font for the title, and i will also change the font colour for both the lyrics and the headings, as this peach colour does not stand out well enough in front of the purple background.

First & second draft versions of CD back page for Digi-Pak

Cd Covers - Analysis.

After researching many different artists form the Pop genre and current chart album covers, i noticed one particular theme that is re-occurring on many CD covers; the artist's image is often a close up shot and very rarely is shot with below the waist line in the camera shot. I assume this is to create a connection between the artist to the audience, and allows the genre and the mood or message of the album to be conveyed through the cover image.
In addition to this I also noticed how the text used on the cover page for the album title and artists name is very often written in very simple font, as well as noticing how there is very little, if any, additional text or images/decorations added to the cover page, presumably as it conveys a simplistic feel.

The body language of the artist in the imaeg that is used on the cover of a cd package varies, and there is no majority of either eye level/eye contact with camera as opposed to a side shot with the performers direction of sight facing another way, although more recently it appears to be that most recently; forward facing and direct eye contact body language/posture is used for cover images more so than a different angle of the perfomer, such as Demi Lovato's cover image for her album unbroken.

Research: Changes to the Music Industry.

I have done some additional research into the decreasing popularity of physical album sales, and the increase in digital single downloads, as part of my research for the digi-pak task and CD magazine advertisement.
I found that there has been an increase in the popularity and importance of single download sales which has undermined the need for physical album purchases.
 Changes to the Music Industry.
There has been a fairly significant decrease in the number of album sales in recent years, both in physical sales and more recently in digital album sales. Factors such as problems such as the on-going recession are factors likely to be causing this decrease- with people choosing to not prioritise music buying; however there are other factors such as an increase in a desire for single collections as opposed to album’s. This has resulted in artists focusing more on promoting single releases rather than prioritising album promotion, as the music industry is going through a change that has created the image that the chart positions of singles are becoming as important as the chart positions and sales of the artists album.
With this change, the consistent good quality of songs on an album is becoming les regular as there are often 3 or 4 really good songs, with additional ‘filler’ songs, due to artists realising the popularity of single downloads as opposed to album downloads as a whole, which is further decreasing the popularity of albums.
The image below is a chart of CD sales, and album & single downloads in the U.S up to 2009, with predictions of the following years. As the image shows; in 2009 Album downloads were at 76,163 sales and predicted to increase slightly, whereas Cd sales were slightly higher at 295,237 but sales were expected to decrease, and in 2009 single download sales were increasing on 1,159,174.

The influence of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube

With the popularity of social networking sites such as twitter and Facebook increasing significantly in the last few years, many artists popularity is measured on the amount of followers or 'likes' as an indication of how many fans the artist has.
Artist such as Lady Gaga, who has 450,551,445 views on her YouTube video of Bad Romance, as well as having nearly 200 million followers on Twitter, and being the most ‘liked’ artist on Facebook; are all statistics that imply the immense success of Lady Gaga.

There has also been a change in the way music video's are being premiered for the first time. In previous years new video's were premiered on television music channels- with channels such as MTV having the exclusive 'first play'. However, many new music video's are now premiered on YouTube or VeVo, as well as on the Artists own website; Which also shows the change in promotion strategies.

Images for Digipak

These are some images i have taken of my performer as possible images i could use for sides of my Digi-pak or magazine advertisement. I am unsure about the first two shots, as the performeer looks slightly awkward, however i like the setting and spacing of the image as long shots. I think images 4,5, & 6 are good shots, as i used  aslightly low camera angle and side shot of the perofmer, which i think would work well as an image the digi-pak.
I chose to have the photo's in a nature setting, as i think it creates an image of simplicity rather than having a bright background that could attract attention away from the artist.

Costume for video and CD images

These are images of the costumes i plan to use for my performer when filming the video. The top image is the clothing that will be mostly used, as well as the white zip up jacket.
I chose the leopard print jacket, the black dress and the pink top as i think they add to the image of individuaty of the performer that i wantd to create. Whereas i chose the ripped jeans and white zip up jacket to create the insecure and vulnerable side of the performer's character.

CD cover analysis

Adele  - Turning Tables.

I researched single and album covers of artists that I think convey a similar style to the song I am using for my music video. I looked at this official single cover for Adele’s Turning Tables from her second album ‘21’, as I think it conveys a vulnerability similarly to how I wish to promote the artist for my video.
The cover is a single image of just Adele herself, with the image being taken using direct eye contact and eye level with the camera, which is used to create a connection with the artist and the audience.
The clothing Adele is wearing is a large, purposely oversized woollen cardigan that is wrapped around her neck; this conveys a vulnerability about the artist and suggests the tone of the song, along with the fact that she is not dressed glamorously, which will make the audience able to relate to.
The choice of colouring effect of the cover also suggests that the tone of the song is a low tempo song, as the image itself is tinted black and white, and the text used for the song title and artist name is white and light green, which adds to the simplicity of the cover, also further connoting the tone of the song.
From the album cover it is hard o distinguish who the direct target audience is aimed at, but due to the lack of bold glamour, it would suggest the general target audience is people of a mature age, as opposed to young teenagers, that most pop music is typically aimed at. However, we know that Adele’s music is bought in the masses by younger generations (as the album from which this single came from ‘21’ has sold one copy every 7 seconds since her Brit Awards appearance in 2011) showing she appears to have no specific target audience.

Shooting schedule change and Health & safety considerations

Due to obstructions with my performer not being able to perform when i first made plans to film, the schedule for filming has changed to Friday 9th to Sunday 11th of March, and the following weekend, the 17th & 18th. I realise this leaves a short time frame to edit and construct my video, however I am confident that my planning of how I will construct the editing will allow me to finish the video in good quality on time, with the use of my storyboard and analysis of previous videos.

EDIT: The filming on the first weekend was successful and I used several of the scene concepts from my storyboard and used all the areas of location for filming that I had planned, with also filming some unplanned scenes that I felt would fit with the storyboard. However, I still had some important scenes to film, which were shot on the following weekend. I filmed all planned shots and included some additional scenes in new location areas that I felt fitted with the concept of the video.
I think my filming is complete now and I am satisfied that I have enough good quality material to produce the video with.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

When i started my video research and preperation i didnt believe there were any considerable health and safety considerations i needed to consider as i planned to use my garden, a footpath, rooms in my house and a field to shoot scenes and there are no particular scenes which i thought could impose issues of safety. However when i looked into health and safety guidelines to consider i realised there were a few, although only minor issues of safety in the locations i had planned for filming.
The most significant issue i could find was the issue of safety for both me and the performer when filming on the embankment scenes, as i took several low and high angle shots from the slopes of the embankment which could have created issues of injuries if i had slipped and fallen down the hill.
I don't believethere are any other significnt issues that could become an issue of health and safety on further filming.

Performer for my video.

For my video i have decided to use my sister Emily as the performer i will use.I will only be having one performer for the full duration of the video and i felt that she will portray the characteristics well that will convey the song correctly.

Other videos - influence for character

Demi Lovato - Skyscraper

I looked at other current videos that also have a similar tone/mood like the downbeat tone of the song I am using for my own video I looked at the way these videos used the artists expressions and extreme close ups as well as long shots.

One video in particular that has inspired my ideas is Demi Lovato's 'Skyscraper' video, which as the images show, uses long shots, to show the artist walking, and reflecting- to fit with the mood of the song, which is an idea I included in my storyboard. I like the way the costume and setting of the video are using light colours which conotate a peacefulness/innocence that the song promotes aswell. In addition to this, i also like the caemra angles used in the video, the use of the high angle long shots that work well to convey a vulnerability, which is one aspect of the video i will take inspiration from for my own video. The pace of song, including the movements of the performer being slow, and the use of several shots of the performer walking as a way of conveying the performing is reflecting on something, in a similar way to Adele's - Someone Like You video, are other aspects of this video that i will take inspiration from.

alternate versions of performance & styles of my chosen song.

When doing my research, I looked at the promotion of the album titled 'Cinderella eyes' where my chosen music video song comes from, and although the song was never released as a single, and remains only as an album track, the song was performed acoustically for promotion - which is shown in the video above, for several music shows such as 'The Album Chart Show; This performance has given me additional ideas & inspiration for the tone and mood I will aim to convey in my video.

Researching Promotion strategies of new music releases.

I wanted to research the image of the artist that was created to promote the song i am using for my video, so I looked into the ways this was done by first looking at the artists website, finding articles on her explaining the concept of the album and specifically talking about overcoming bullying - which co-insides with the song 'Sticks & Stones' (see a previous post for link to the article/interview video).
I then looked at the promotional photos used to promote the song and album, observing how the artist is conveyed as vulnerable and timid, which the 'Girl Allowed' image and the mirror reflection image (which is also used in the official lyrical video for the song) both show. This image not only promotes the album 'Cinderella Eyes' but links specifically to the song 'Sticks & Stones' which is based on overcoming the vulnerability that bullying causes.
These promotional strategies and the image used for the song have further influenced my ideas on the style (such as costume, make-up) and the character that my performer should aim to convey in my music video for this song.
